English champions Manchester City have struggled to achieve a narrow away win in the Premier League.
The defending champions won 1-0 (0-0) against the strong promoted Sheffield United. Sergio Agüero, who had only just replaced him, decided the match in the 73rd minute and gave Manchester City the victory with his 16th season goal.
Coach Pep Guardiola’s side struggled on Bramall Lane but could have taken the lead in the first half. Manchester City was awarded a penalty after a foul on Riyad Mahrez. However, Gabriel Jesus’ shot failed in the 36th minute against strong Sheffield goalkeeper Dean Henderson, on loan from Manchester United. Jesus only converted three of his last six penalty kicks.
The away win saw Man City close the gap to leaders Liverpool FC and coach Jürgen Klopp to 13 points by Thursday evening. Liverpool will then play for Wolverhampton Wanderers. The Reds, however, have played two games less than runners-up City.
Chelsea FC only managed a 2-2 (1-0) win over Arsenal FC in the London derby, despite being outnumbered for more than an hour and leading twice. Arsenal defender and former Chelsea professional David Luiz was red-carded after a 26-minute push in the penalty area, but Chelsea’s penalty was converted by Jorginho (28).
After the 18-year-old Gabriel Martinelli (63) equalised for Arsenal, César Azpilicueta (84) put the home side back in the lead at Stamford Bridge. But Héctor Bellerín (87.) again managed to equalise for the Gunners.
