Lyon surprised and eliminated the Italian league champions, Cristiano Ronaldo’s Juventus. Also despite losing 2-1 in Turin on Friday in the second leg of the Champions League round.
The French thus made the most of their away goals to claim a 1-0 first-leg victory in late February. The new coronavirus pandemic halted the competition.
The Dutchman Memphis Depay put Lyon ahead in Friday’s match, on a penalty in the 12th. Cristiano Ronaldo then scored a double (43 on penalty, 60). But his team came within one goal of turning the tie around.
Lyon will play in the quarterfinals next Friday in Lisbon against Manchester City, who eliminated Real Madrid on Friday.
After winning their ninth consecutive Italian league title at the end of July, Juventus were on a mission to try. And win the European championship, something they have not done since 1996.
The end of the season was not a time for optimism. It lost the Italian Cup final in June to Napoli on penalties. And was crowned champion in Serie A but with a lacklustre record in his final matches. He was scoring just eight points from his last eight games.
Cristiano Ronaldo, who has five titles in the Champions, will still not be able to lift the ‘Orejona’ with the Turin team. Last season, his first in the ‘Juve’, had fallen in the quarterfinals against the Dutch Ajax.
Lyon, meanwhile, reaches the quarterfinals of the Champions League in a season that has so far been very negative for the club.
They finished seventh in Ligue 1, which terminate before the end due to the pandemic, and lost on penalties to Paris Saint-Germain in the French League Cup final last Friday.
It does not have therefore ticket for the European competitions of the next season and its only trick for it would be to gain this Champions. This mission still seems complicated but that, after acceding to ‘Final 8’, continues being possible.
