What is a Pair ?

In the significant context of gambling, a pair refers to any two matching dice, cards or slot game symbols that appear in the course of their turn. This term is greatly known from Poker, and it simply refers to two cards of varied suits sharing the same value. Pairs are one of Poker’s ranked hands beating high cards.

Pair Explained

A pair refers to two of anything but this can also refer to a double in a dice roll, the 2-symbol win in slots or the ‘split bet’ in Roulette. Moreover, in casino slang, a pair is best known as a term for a two-card set. Standard playing cards come with four suits; Spades, Clubs, Diamonds, and Hearts. In every suit, thirteen cards are available, and these cards are ranked consecutively as 2-3-4-5-6-7-8-9-10-J-Q-K-A. Sometimes, ace is considered the lowest card and the top place is the King. Two cards with the same value make a pair.

In Poker, a player that holds the pair has a greater chance of winning the pot, as a pair, most especially the high ones such as A-A and K-K, can beat other hands of low pairs and high cards. Pairs are ideal for holding in community or stud-card games. This is because a ‘flop’ or ‘lucky draw’ can find triple sets or perhaps four-of-a-kind. These are stronger hands with more chance of winning. Another may also contribute to a pair by ‘Fifth Street’ or ‘river play’ with two pairs and ultimately winning over any pair. Two-pair hands are often beaten by 3-of-a kind hands.

In Video Poker, players want high pairs to be able to win where there are multiple pairs in a showdown. The pair with the highest value wins. If the two players have a similar pair then the kicker will determine the tie-break. Players with highest cards win. For instance, a hand of 3-4-6-6-8 will lose to 4-6-6-9 for the reason that the King in the second hand is higher than the 8 in the first.
