What Is a Gambling Licence ?

Gambling licences are documents that show the authorisation of a person or group of people to run a gambling service in a particular area. Therefore, before a gambling operator can legitimately run any gambling institution, they will need a gambling licence. An effective regulatory authority has the sole power to give a gambling licence, which has specific terms and conditions that must be strictly abided to by gambling operators. These authorities include legal gaming boards or the gambling commission.

Gambling Licence Explained

Before any gambling operator can commercially run a gambling service, whether physical or online, such operators needs a gambling licence. If a company or individual operates a gambling service without a licence, such a company will be charged for illegal gaming, which many countries do not handle lightly. Only a recognised and legal gaming authority of the state where the company operates can issue a licence. For instance, if a company works in more than one country, such a company will need several different licences, depending on where they operate their services.

An operator must always abide by the terms and conditions of a gambling licence. Such conditions include tax and financial requirements, responsible gaming policies and the operation of the service. That is, they must operate the game impartially and in ways that protect the clients’ rights and avoid criminal activity. Any gambling company that cannot keep up with these terms may be legally punished or closed down.

Undoubtedly, casinos, betting shops, and even online gaming websites require gambling licences. Nevertheless, there are many other games, like lotteries, bingo games and raffles and tombolas that need licencing, even if they are charity-oriented revenue organisations. The role of licences is to protect customers’ rights, ensure fair gaming systems, and show the credibility of the gaming operator.
