Introduction to Formula 1 Betting

Formula 1 has become a relatively uncompetitive sport dominated by a small number of drivers and teams. However, the Grand Prix’s that make up the programme each year attract plenty of betting interest. There are 21 races during 2019, from March to December. Ten of those races take place on tracks in Europe. Every continent except Africa stages at least on Grand Prix during the current season. There is generally a race every other Sunday which follows qualifying sessions over the previous two days. Despite the uncompetitive nature of the racing, Formula 1 attracts huge crowds and TV audiences all around the world. Driver’s are given lucrative contracts and the teams invest heavily in research and development of the cars.

Betting Events

The Formula 1 season is made up of 21 races at tracks all around the world. Bettors can place bets on the winner of each race and the championship for drivers and teams. It is rare for the driver’s champion not to represent the team champions. Bookmakers update their markets for the season-long championships after each race or significant news. At the end of each season, some drivers move to another team. There is an element of a transfer system, and a significant departure will affect the betting markets. Lewis Hamilton is the defending champion in 2019 and has won five driver’s championships. Some bookmakers are offering odds on the number of championships he has won when he retires. Hamilton could become the most successful Formula 1 driver ever.

Betting Types

Formula 1 is a motor racing sport with a definite outcome. It is akin to horse racing in that customers can bet on the winner of a race and the drivers to make the payout places. Bettors can place win and each way bets. The place terms are usually one third the odds for the first two places. In the current era, there are only five potential winners of a race. Bookmakers are reluctant to offer betting on drivers to finish in the first three and make the podium. They would be offering over the odds on the third place because of the nature of the win market. Bettors can place pre-race, in-play and ante-post bets on each race and the two championships. At the end of each season, some bookmakers issue ante-post betting on the outright winner of the titles the following year.

Formula 1 Markets

There are a limited number of Formula 1 markets. Bettors can place wagers on the winner of each race and the Driver’s and Constructor’s Championship. There is also a popular market on the driver to qualify in poll position. Bookmakers also offer season-long markets on selected drivers and teams. For example, it is possible to bet on Lewis Hamilton’s total race wins and points. There is also a betting market on the fastest lap during qualifying and the race.
