What Is Esports ?

Online and offline video game tournaments are known as esports. Many players participate in these games. Among the world’s biggest tournaments takes place during the DreamHack Festival. These tournaments involve games such as Overwatch and Call of Duty. Certain video games, including League of Legends, have their own championship tournaments. However, these are tournaments held in real life. Many more sports tournaments are played online. In some cases, players are matched with other players that they are on the same level as.

Esports Explained

There is much debate over whether esports should be considered as real sports or not. Though some in the sports industry have dismissed the idea, the French government supports it. In fact, they even tried to start regulating it, in 2016. The French government feels that since 85,000 people all over the country play esports, they should be considered actual sports. More than four million citizens of France regularly watch esports online. Some of the regulations put into place will be that minors need their parents’ permission to participate in esports. Prize winnings are also set to be regulated.

From 2012 to 2017, 59 tournaments have included a player named Sahil Arora. Over the course of 59 tournaments, his winnings totaled more than $2.7 million. Most of his winnings came from playing DOTA 2 online. This incredibly popular game is a multi-online battle arena game that can be played for free. In 2017 the DOTA 2 tournament held in Kiev, Ukraine offered up $3 million in its prize pool. Sometimes, if a team of players are extremely successful in a tournament they can land a sponsorship deal. Steel Series and Razer are two companies likely to offer players this opportunity.

However, the kind of money to be made from a major sponsorship deal is only accessible to the best of the best. While professional esports players can earn money in the industry, the only others that can are those who place their bets using websites like EGB.com. In this respect, it is the same as betting on a sports site that covers, for example, football or basketball. The only difference is that in esports, play money can be used to place bets. This allows players to learn more about a particular game while avoiding unnecessary financial risks. In this way, esports can be used as a learning tool when a player is a beginner.
