What is Big Dog ?

You’ve probably encountered a Big Dog when playing poker. As an expert, you perhaps know what it means. But for beginners, understanding a Big Dog is a good start.

A Big Dog is commonly called a non-standard poker hand, meaning it’s a player who has a low chance of winning.

A Big Dog also consists of five cards. The Ace is the highest and 9 is the lowest. Here, it’s not essential to possess a pair to match the suit or a flush.

When it comes to the order of cards, these start from Ace, King, Queen, Jack, and 9. Or it begins from Ace, King, Jack, 10 and 9.

The key elements are that the middle cards fit between the 9 and ace.

Big Dog Explained

A Big Dog is a fairly good hand to use in a game that requires the application of non-standard hands. It is also a part of the poker animal family that comprises of Little Cat, Big Cat, and Little Dog.

The above hands are quite similar to a Big Dog. They are defined by having a high or low card. For instance, a Little Cat consists of 8 and 3. While 8 is the highest card, 3 is the lowest one. 7, 6, 5, and 4 are typically between them.

Despite the mental image you have as a player, the Big Dog is not the highest ranked among the four in the non-standard hierarchy.

As with other games in the poker industry, understanding its nature and the rules pay off at the end of the day.

Whether it’s set by a friend or the house that is running the game, a Big Dog won’t have much use if non-standard hands are not recognised.

When it comes to ranking, Big Dog is above a Little Dog and below a Little Tiger. A Little Dog ranks below a Straight Flush House and above a straight. The highest is 7, and the lowest is 2. A Little Tiger, also called a Little Cat, ranks below a big cat and above any dog. The highest is 8, and the lowest is 3.

So, what’s your thought? Give a Big Dog a try today!
