After 7 years an EU-Team is again in the final of the LoL WM

The second semi-final of the LoL WM 2018 has been decided. With Fnatic a team from Europe enters the final. This is the first time since 2011 that an EU team has reached the final of the League of Legends World Cup.

The second semi-final of the LoL WM 2018 was played this morning, 28.10., between Fnatic from Europe and the US team Cloud 9. It was a clear affair from the first minutes on.

So the 2nd semi-final of the LoL Worlds 2018 went: Fnatic dismantled Cloud 9 formally and gave the Americans no chance.

The current meta often means that the team in League of Legends that takes the lead early wins. This is called “snowballing” or an avalanche effect, in which a small lead gets bigger and bigger. So the games between Fnatic and Cloud 9 seemed to be one-sided.

Fnatic won the encounter with Cloud 9 clearly with 3-0.

So this is a surprise: In this game the favorite, Fnatic, won. All in all, this is the tournament course of the LoL Worlds 2018 but highly unusual. So it was a sensation that 3 “non-Asia” teams were in the semi-finals.

After the elimination of 5 teams from Asia, Fnatic will play against the Chinese of Invictus Gaming in the final. The last time a team from Europe reached the final in 2011 was in the prehistoric days of League of Legends. Even then it was Fnatic you could even win the Worlds 2011.

From 2012 to 2017, however, the winner always came from Asia. Also in 2018 Invictus Gaming from China is considered the favorite to win the thing.

Yesterday’s results

This morning, 27.10, the first semi-final of the LoL Worlds 2018 took place. G2 Esports met Invictus Gaming in the semi-final of the League of Legends World Championships. The dying of the favorites came to an end this time. Invictus Gaming with top player TheShy enters the final.

Crazy Worlds so far: The Worlds in League of Legends run so crazy that in the betting game “LoL Pick Em 2018” there was only one out of 3.8 million who was right. And now, for the first time, he was wrong too.

In today’s match between the Spanish team G2 eSports and the Chinese team Invictus Gaming, the super-tipper had bet on the underdogs from Spain. But the bet didn’t win anything today.

That’s how the first semi-final went: This morning there was a so-called “stomp”. That’s what it’s called in League of Legends when one team overruns the other. Invictus Gaming was as aggressive as you know it from them. All three matches ended in less than 30 minutes:

In the first match the Chinese ADC, “JackeyLove”, turned on Lucian and had 6 deathblows. Invictus Gaming dominated the match with 16-4 kills.

In the second match, the toplander “TheShy” on Jayce and “Rookie” on LeBlanc shone with the Chinese and took 14 of their team’s 18 kills.

Aatrox-LoL

In the third match G2 started strong, but in the end, it wasn’t enough. Again the toplaner of Invictus Gaming “TheShy” could decide the match for his team. This time on Aatrox.

The most important scene: In the decisive scene in the third match Invictus Gaming wanted to withdraw before a team fight, but TheShy decided to attack. And that “led to a good result”, as he explains in an interview with Inven.

Rise of the West at the LoL WM stopped for the first time: This time the highly favored Asian team won. After 5 other teams from South Korea and China were eliminated, Invictus Gaming could reach its top form.

The previous trend of the LoL Worlds 2018, the “rise of the West”, was not continued today.

With the elimination of G2 Esports, the last German to play at the LoL Worlds 2018 will also be eliminated. Coach Fabian “GrabbZ” Lohmann misses the final. On Twitter, he writes that IG was simply the better team.

G2 eSports will go home with $150,000 as a consolation prize.

For the winners, it goes on in the LoL WM final. Their opponent is either Cloud 9 or Fnatic.
